FEATURED COMPOSERAmin Bhatia
Composer and sound designer Amin Bhatia's fascination with orchestral music and electronics won him international fame in his youth. It led to projects with David Foster, Steve Porcaro and a solo album on Capitol Records Cinema label titled The Interstellar Suite. The realism and expression of his sound won critical acclaim among those in both the electronic and classical music genres. Amin's approach has been likened to the harmonic inventiveness of Jerry Goldsmith and the technical prowess of Hans Zimmer. more
Imani Winds
I discovered the Imani Winds Wind Quintet on NPR’s website and flipped. This is an intriguing group of musicians and as an ensemble they deserve every success.
Formed in 1997 by flutist/composer, Valerie Coleman (both Valerie and French Horn player, Jeff Scott, compose new music for the ensemble), their programming is adventurous, they are not afraid to experiment, and they have the chops to pull it off. Their most recent CD release, Josephine Baker—A Life of Le Jazz Hot, a work that musically depicts the life of the renowned dancer, is part of a multi-media presentation that includes music, film, and dance. Imani Winds is currently performing this work on tour. more

| MUSIC IN THE NEWS Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to perform work inspired by music of Grateful Dead When the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra warms up a week from Friday, the musicians will be clad in their usual summer attire: White dinner jackets and bow ties for the men, white tops and black skirts or slacks for the women.
Opening Day With The Escher String Quartet WNYC moved into new studios this month, after 84 years spent broadcasting from the Municipal Building in lower Manhattan. Not only does this mean more breathing room for staff and guests — with 40 percent more floor space and twice the number of recording studios and booths — but it also means the addition of a new, up-to-date performance studio. So after weeks of test runs and fine-tuning, Soundcheck christened the space on air when the up-and-coming Escher String Quartet stopped by to perform a couple of pieces. MORE MUSIC NEWS |
LAGNIAPPE Lagniappe will help you explore music and food together. Join chef Chris Loss, Director of the Ventura Center For Menu Research and Development at The Culinary Institute of America, as he presents the perfect companion meal to complement Igor Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments. EDITORIALS Reminiscences of George Crumb at Swarthmore College Contemporary music is often perceived to be imbued with esoteric and abstract meaning, leaving many concert goers thinking, “Well, I suppose that was good, but I didn’t understand it!” As a music student at Swarthmore College, in the suburbs of Philadelphia, there seemed to be a culture of intellectual competition in how obscure musical meaning could be, either intended or interpreted. During my sophomore year, I took a seminar on Contemporary American Composers, where we read all about a particular composer during the week leading up to the seminar meeting, and then the composer in question would attend our seminar to lecture, if they wished, and answer our questions. I remember Milton Babbitt’s visit as the ultimate in the intellectual interpretation exercise. Spotlight on the 2007 Classical Grammy NomineesJoanna Wulfsberg We can safely assume that the paparazzi will flock to Justin Timberlake rather than Bernard Haitink. And it’s unlikely that Martha Argerich will beat out Beyonce for the cover of People magazine. Nevertheless, the 49th Annual Grammy Awards, to be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 11, 2007, features some of the classical music world’s most glittering stars and coveted awards. |
